QIâRAâS âprivate negotiationsâ with Quay Tolsite lasted less than twenty minutes before they broke down in the messiest way imaginable.
Flanked by L3-37 and Beckett, she followed Quay and his flunkies down the central tunnel, through a series of corridors that seemed to plunge ever deeper into the mines.
Qiâraâs mind was moving quickly, analyzing the environment and calculating their next move. It was the way sheâd learned to survive, the vigilance Dryden Vos had drilled into her in the years since sheâd left Corellia. They had been difficult times, certainly, and dark times in many ways. Crimson Dawn had left its mark on her, transforming her from a young scrumrat into a ruthless warrior who relied on her wits and cunning in a galaxy that was both cruel and utterly indifferent to her existence. Looking back, Qiâra didnât like to think about some of the things that had happened to her during those yearsâthings she could never tell Han, no matter how much he said he wanted to knowâbut they had left scars. The kind you couldnât always see on the outside.
Theyâd stopped walking, she realized, having reached the mining colonyâs operations center. A half dozen surveillance droids labored in front of closed-circuit monitors whose screens displayed every tunnel, lift, and cavern in the complex, while a handful of supervisors stood watch over them. Quay gestured toward the arrangement with an unmistakable pride and again broke into the slurpy linguistic glop that passed for speech.
âDirector Tolsite says all systems in this sector of the facility are operated out of this room,â L3-37 translated, annoyed at having been forced into playing a role, however small, in relaying corporate propaganda. âItâs how theyâre able to maintain control over so many with so few.â
Qiâra nodded, glancing casually at one of the screens. On it, she saw Han and Chewbacca being marched along by two electrostaff-wielding Pyke sentinels, then forced backward and corralled into a lift that was already packed with slaves. Her heart sank at the hopelessness of the place. It was clear that the leaders and sentinels had no regard for their laborersâlife was something to be exploited until it no longer served a purpose and then cast aside as efficiently as possible.
She glanced once more at the screen. One of the sentinels had shoved Han to the floor, and she caught a familiar flash of anger on his face. Seeing that, its echo rose in her own mind, tightening her throat and making the back of her neck burn with outrage.
The Pyke, she thought, were filth.
It was going to feel good taking them down.
